Vegan Food Guide to Amsterdam

vegan food guide to Amsterdam #vegan #travel #Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a very vegan and veggie-friendly place, if you know where to go. It’s not that common to be vegan & gluten-free in the Netherlands, to say the least. Think lots of stroopwaffles and Nutella. But I found plenty of plant-based options, after talking to locals and asking around for recommendations. I’m excited to share my vegan food guide to Amsterdam.

 1 / SLA

SLA was my go-to for delicious, affordable salads! There whole menu is marked to let you know what items are vegan and gluten-free, along with other allergy-friendly labels. I found this incredibly comforting, because it shows how aware they are of what goes into they’re food.

You can make your own salad from their extensive salad bar. All the salad dressings are vegan (my favorite was a combo of mustard + hemp seed oil + agave) which was amazing! On top of that, they even have raw vegan desserts and delicious, healthy dairy-free smoothies. They have locations all over the city too so this is probably the most convenient and easy to find option.

2 / Juice Brothers

Juice Brothers is great for a light plant-based breakfast or snack. This juice bar offers acai bowls, smoothie bowls, oatmeal bowls, smoothies, oat bars, and more. I loved their acai bowl topped with handmade granola, almond butter, and banana and it was the best breakfast ever. I even went once and had it for dinner because I always crave acai.

They serve plenty of rainbow-colored juices and smoothies of course (you’ve got to try their chocolate almond mylk!) along with salads, raw vegan wraps, kale chips, and crackers. Or if you’re in the mood for something sweet, they’ve even got a nice selection of raw vegan cheesecake, bliss balls, and Twyx bars. A definite must-try for anyone looking for juice or grab-and-go raw food!

3 / YAY! Health Store & More

A fully raw vegan cafe, yoga studio, and health store – YAY! is really a one-stop-shop for all things plant-based. I went here two or three times while I was in Amsterdam, one of which was for their raw vegan Christmas brunch buffet. It was spectacular! We tried their vegan brunch buffet and were blown away. They served Italian & Mexican-inspired quiche, cauliflower rice stuffed peppers, beetroot gazpacho, mini tacos, kale chips, and more.

Don’t even get me going on all the heavenly desserts. My two favorites were the macadamia cacao nib cookies and raspberry chia jam squares that I swear tasted just like Pop-Tarts. The first time I went, I tried the tasting platter which I highly recommend because it gives you a good idea of all they have to offer.

For lunch, I recommend the raw, vegan noodle bowl with kelp noodles and shitake mushrooms or raw kale salad with wild herb pesto, pomegranate & raisins. And yes, they even have a raw vegan dessert case to choose from if you still have room after your meal. It’s tucked away in Albert Cuypstraat market so definitely ask for directions to get there!

4 / De Kas

De Kas was the best, highest-quality farm-to-table restaurant I’ve ever been to. I went, not knowing it was a Michelin restaurant and not knowing if I’d be able to eat anything. After telling the waiter I was both vegan and gluten-free, he said it wouldn’t be a problem.

Out came four courses of beautifully plated, vibrant and delicious plant-based meals. For my main course, I enjoyed the roasted fennel, cauliflower, and artichoke with a fennel-based sauce. They even had a vegan and gluten-free bread that was the best bread I’d had in the past year.

The whole restaurant is situated in a greenhouse with outdoor gardens where they get their herbs and vegetables. You can read about their own local farm, where everything is locally sourced. If you want a nicer meal in a beautiful environment, this is the best place to try!

5 / Vegabond

Okay, so Vegabond is more a vegan health food store than a restaurant. But, they have a cute little cafe nestled at the front of their store where they serve vegan sandwiches, rice paper rolls, bliss balls, and fresh smoothies.

The rice paper rolls were the only vegan and gluten-free meal choice on the menu, but if you’re not gluten-free then you’ll definitely have more luck. I liked the casual vibe here. Also, I bought a mini tub of vegan vanilla ice cream by Booja Booja which was delicious. I ended up getting a whole tub to take back to my hotel. So go here if you like lighter meals or want to stock up on snacks, you won’t regret it.

6 / Lavinia Good Food

Lavinia Good Food clearly marks their vegan dishes like oatmeal, avocado toast, and vegan pizza. My favorite was their sweet potato with tahini sauce. Also, you can find a good selection of vegan chocolates here.

7 / Beter & Leuk

Beter & Leuk serves really delicious vegan buckwheat pancakes with maple syrup. It’s a locally-owned, quaint cafe that we went to one day for breakfast. But I’d say go there for lunch because there’s more vegan options like soup, a vegan burger, and masala dosa to name a few.
