Laguna Beach Farmers’ Market Haul

Laguna Beach farmers' market haul

Happy (almost) first day of spring! I can’t tell you how excited I am for the new season. Not that winter has been unbearable here in Los Angeles, but there’s just something about all the spring blooms, bright colors, and seasonal fruits & veggies that get me extra excited around this time of year. I headed to the Laguna Beach farmers’ market in Orange County over the weekend, which was a bit farther than I’d normally go but it was totally worth it.

I’ve decided that I really want to give you all a comprehensive guide to all of the farmers’ markets in Los Angeles. Since it’s one of my favorite things to do and I literally go to as many as I can, I feel like it could be really helpful for anyone living in L.A. or just passing through. There are multiple markets you can go to every day of the week, like the Hollywood Farmers’ Market or the Larchmont Farmers’ Market or the Mar Vista Farmers’ Market

Here’s everything in my usual farmers’ market food haul:

  1. Lemons
  2. Freshly baked sourdough bread
  3. Artisanal almond butter
  4. Whatever veggies are in season
  5. Perfectly ripe avocados
  6. Ooey gooey delicious dates
  7. Strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries
  8. Cauliflower
  9. A succulent or two

I guess you can just start calling me the master of the L.A. farmers’ markets. This past Saturday I went on an adventure to Laguna Beach in Orange County, so I just had to stop by the farmers’ market. It’s open from 8am-noon every Saturday and is a huge market compared to the others in the city. Yesterday I was talking all about the yummy vegan breakfast recipes I can’t wait to make this weekend inspired by these beautifully juicy strawberries I found.

What I really liked about this market was it was really busy. Just literally bustling with people and positive energy. It makes me so happy to be a part of a community that is so supportive of local organic farms and small batch food producers. Plus they have way more than just food too, like these really cute little succulents and mini cactuses.

I was surprised to learn from one of the vendors that apparently grapes are about to go out of season. Which was a bummer for me because I really like keeping some grapes in the freezer. They make a really refreshing snack! So I stocked up on a couple of bunches of these big juicy grapes that I found.

Another bonus for this market is the vendors are so kind and helpful.

They really seemed to genuinely enjoy talking to me about their sourcing and their products. I really try to buy all organic produce as much as possible and I like knowing where my food comes from.

Everyone who goes to farmers’ markets knows that there are always free samples.

The sampling was definitely in full force at this market which I appreciated! Sometimes I don’t know what I want until I try it, you know? Plus it lets me discover new fruit which I may have not thought to try before! Like pomegranate for example (I know, can you believe I’d never had it before?).

I’m also starting to learn more about different fruits the more I go to the market. Did you ever realize how many different kinds of apples there are? I used to think there were just two options: red or green. But it turns out there are so many more than that: Fuji, Honeycrisp, Gala, Granny Smith. The list goes on and on. There are actually over 7,500 varieties of apples around the world. Crazy right? My dad is very particular about the kinds of apples he buys, so I’m trying to learn more about it.

The weather has brightened up. Spring is here and I couldn’t be more happy. I feel more energetic and positive and ready to take on whatever is thrown at me.  I think I was just ready for a change of seasons and I hope you all can feel this excitement too! Maybe try going to a farmers’ market this weekend that you’ve never been to before and seeing how it goes. Be adventurous, explore, and just be happy.
