Hollywood Farmers Market Los Angeles

The Hollywood Farmers' Market

Hollywood farmers market

I already told you guys, I’m a farmers’ market regular. Normally, I go to the Mar Vista Farmers Market on Sundays, but this past weekend I decided to switch it up.

I grabbed my produce bag and headed to Hollywood to see what all the fuss was about. Apparently this is the most heavily frequented farmers’ market in Los Angeles, so I had to check it out. I can’t believe I had never been before!

I got there and was immediately in awe of all the beautiful colors. As they say you should “eat the rainbow”. One step into the market and you can see how easy it is to actually do this.

I was surrounded by bright, organic produce of all shapes and sizes. Some of it I had never even seen before, like these green, light orange, and purple heads of romanesco broccoli. I thought “I’ve just got to try making something with this”. It’s an ingredient I’d definitely never used before.

I tend to gravitate towards the fruit.

Especially when it’s piled up high in these nice wooden baskets. I have always been a “fruit person”: bananas, apples, mangoes, oranges, pineapple, cherries, grapes, you name it. I could go on and on.

The best part is the fruit stands always have samples for you to try! I definitely taste test what I plan on getting before I buy it. There are almost always fresh herbs you can buy at the farmers’ market. Hollywood did not disappoint. I found this vendor selling little pots of all the herbs and spices that you can imagine.

So, I went out on a limb and got some rosemary, which I usually don’t use. I tend to go for basil or mint but really am feeling adventurous in the kitchen lately. Naturally, my next stop was the flower booth. Since it’s winter, there were more pretty exotic flowers like these purple ones that I didn’t catch the name of.

I still can never manage to leave the market without buying a new bouquet of flowers. Soon my apartment is going to turn into a greenhouse, but I don’t mind.

For all my fellow vegans out there, I discovered these vegan, freshly baked french-style croissants from Ridiculous Baking Company. The owner Adam is working on making a gluten-free version for me. I’ll admit this is one of the comfort foods I miss the most, so I’ll be counting down the days until he perfects the recipe!

Will succulents ever go out of style? I think not. Just look at how pretty they are.

I really can’t get enough of these. Something about them being miniature just makes them that much more appealing. This vendor even tucked a tiny cactus into the mix. You bet I picked it up before anybody else could!

After loading up my bag with all the berries it could hold, I definitely did not have room for anymore. Then I just happened upon these stocks of brussels sprouts which made me laugh. I most definitely could not squeeze these in my bag.

And who knew they came like this? Just goest to show you learn something new every day. I ended my morning happily walking by all the fresh veggies dreaming of what to make next week. The farmers’ market is my favorite place to go to brainstorm new recipe ideas.

Plus I always make a point to eat local as much as I can. I feel good supporting local California farmers, and I especially like knowing where my produce comes from and that it’s organically grown. Next up on my list? A veggie sandwich inspired by what I pick up at the farmers’ market this weekend. I’m thinking an avocado & chickpea salad sandwich, but haven’t decided yet.

Check back next week to see what I come up with!
