Camden Market in London

Surprise! Another #tbt to my London trip with Julian. At this point, it’s obvious it was very much a foodie trip for the both of us. Every day started with us planning out where we wanted to go eat for the day. This particular time we chose Camden Market.

Yep, we planned our days around our meals.

This particular outing was to Camden Market, a popular open-air market packed with food stalls, shopping, restaurants, and all sorts of eclectic people.

We were just casually strolling around when I stumbled across Cupcakes and Shhht, the cutest little booth dedicated to all sorts of vegan & gluten-free desserts. They even had a bunch of raw and refined sugar-free options, putting a big, huge smile on my face. And making my stomach very happy, too.

Since it was the first and only raw vegan dessert shop we found, my boyfriend said to just go for it so I did. I ended up getting the raw vegan salted caramel & peanut butter slice, a slice of raw vegan carrot cake, and a mini raw vegan banoffee pie.

On a normal day, this might have been a little bit much but we were on vacation. Why not treat myself? Everyone knows I am head over heels for raw vegan desserts, so I had to see how I felt about these treats. Let’s just say they passed the taste test with flying colors!

My favorite dessert by far had to be the banoffee pie.

I had never seen or heard of this classic British dessert before. However, it had everything I love in it: bananas layered with a whipped cashew cream and sticky date caramel. I’ve added it to my long, growing list of treats from this trip that I want to recreate at home.

After I had my fill, we walked around the rest of the market surveying all our options. My boyfriend leans towards more savory foods, so luckily there were different cuisines and dishes from all over the world. He’s not picky at all, so his biggest problem was actually deciding what he wanted. I’d say that’s not a bad problem to have.

Ultimately, he settled on local Ethiopian food which actually had plenty of vegan & gluten-free options. With a base of rice, you could pack a box full of super-satisfying lentils, beans, and vegetables.

Although Ethiopian cooking can be meat-centric, many Ethiopians traditionally eat vegan on Wednesdays and Fridays.

So, I was really excited that my boyfriend opted for this vegan-friendly choice. Because it also meant I’d be able to try it! I’d never had Ethiopian food before, but it was absolutely delicious. I always make my own brown rice bowls, like baked sweet potato or corn, and beans. What my boyfriend got was very similar, but the spices were unique.

My boyfriend actually really liked it too, further proving to me that vegan food can be both flavorful and filling. He’s definitely warmed up to the idea the more that he’s been able to try different vegan cuisines from different cultures.

At this point, it was so hot that we felt like we were getting dehydrated. Thank goodness that we happened on this fresh coconut stand. The guy cut open the coconut right in front of us! We guzzled down the most refreshing, naturally sweet coconut water.

The coconut water was gone in a matter of minutes. We liked it so much we even went back to get another one!

After the market, we explored the area around it because there was so much to see. They had these gondolas floating down the canal that you could pay to go on. It made me think of the canals in Italy with the live musicians on board strumming tunes.

Unfortunately, the tours were all booked up by the time we’d discovered it. But it was fine because you could just walk along the water too. I figured we’d get more exercise walking, anyways.

Of course, while in London, I had to get the classic old-fashioned phone booth picture.

It’s one of those photos everyone takes when they’re in London, but I just had to do it. I’m a big sucker for touristy gimmicks like this. My boyfriend snapped this of me, a rare occasion of me being in front of the camera. You can see by the massive smile on my face that I was really excited.

Our whole adventure through Camden Market ended up taking all morning. But we left with fully tummies, happy memories, and a couple of shopping bags. I’d say that’s a morning well done!
