5 Vegan Sushi Recipes

vegan sushi

I’m not exaggerating when I say that all I ate in France was sushi. No joke, I had sushi every night for dinner and sometimes even twice a day if I was in the mood for a sushi lunch. I didn’t realize how popular sushi was in France until I went there and saw it for myself. Plus, besides sushi and the occasional build-your-own salad bar, it was incredibly difficult to find vegan options. Not necessarily in Paris, but when we were road tripping around the French Riviera nobody seemed to know what veganism was. So, sushi was my go-to because it’s always a safe option. I’ve really been missing all the vegetarian/vegan sushi I had in France, so I’ve rounded up these 5 vegan-friendly sushi recipes to curb my cravings.

I was amazed at all the different types of vegetarian sushi available in France that I can’t get here in Hong Kong. Who knew that French sushi would be more vegan-friendly or adaptable to the vegan lifestyle? I eat sushi a lot here in Hong Kong, but it’s always either a plain avocado or cucumber roll. Unless I make it at home, of course.

But in France, I had everything from avocado rice rolls to avocado & cucumber california rolls to avocado & cucumber temaki (or “hand rolls”) to cucumber & sesame seed maki. It was always so delicious and stuffed full! I noticed they stuffed the rolls bigger in France too, which suited me just fine. I normally use coconut aminos to dip my sushi in, which is a gluten-free and low sodium alternative to soy sauce. But I didn’t even need it, that’s how good the sushi was! I was also amazed to discover that some places even offered gluten-free soy sauce.

So now, try to make these 5 vegan sushi recipes:

  1. Cleansing sushi roll with spicy kale and green veggies (Well and Full)
  2. Miso roasted sweet potato sushi with finger limes (Earthy Feast)
  3. Avocado, kale & cabbage sushi roll with sesame seeds  (L’Herbe Muse)
  4. Raw mango avocado sushi with cauliflower rice (Wholehearted Eats)
  5. Asparagus + brown rice sushi rolls with sesame ginger sauce (Happy Hearted Kitchen

Julian and I recently took a Japanese cooking class. They’re all about perfecting their technique. If you want to get really professional, you can get one of these sushi knives from Village Bakery and then you can call yourself a sushi chef.
